Bradlow + Bock objection to the proposed AEC Victorian Redistribution

The Australian Electoral Commission has proposed abolishing the seat of Higgins in the next federal election. Regardless of the future direction of our campaign, we believe this decision didn’t sufficiently consider the social, as well as demographic, implications of removing the seat.

Higgins is the only seat in the country to have a declared job sharing candidacy, a proposal that could push forward representative democracy in Australia. It’s also the only seat in the state where all the declared candidates from Labor, Liberals, Greens and Independent, are women. This should have been an important consideration for the all male AEC Redistribution Committee. In 2024, these considerations are as important as the changing demographics of the area.

That’s why we have lodged our strong objection to the proposed abolition of the seat of Higgins.
